ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

December 2022 – Brian Milton

Tell us about yourself:
What’s up BeachsSide! My name is Brian Milton. I’ve been a member of BeachSide now for 3 years. My wife Brooke and I have 2 daughters, Brinley 11 and Blakely 5.

What do you do for a job?
For 16 years now I have worked at the corporate offices of Harbor Freight Tools managing product marketing and promotional planning.

Tell us something people might not know about you:
I started training Jiu Jitsu last year.

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
Actually my daughter started going to the new kids program here at BeachSide when she was 6 years old. Not long after that my wife joined. It took me a while to admit I wasn’t meeting any of my fitness goals on my own, so I figured I’d try the “class”setting.

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
First impression was the realization of how out of shape I really was. It was intimidating joining the notorious 5:30am class. And it was a challenge at first to check the pride at the door and that “scaled” wasn’t just meant for the de-conditioned athletes. My conditioning/endurance in the workouts still leave me wishing it were better. But my strength has grown exponentially. I understand now that workouts aren’t ever supposed to be easy, and scaling weight or the reps to hit the workout goals is what’s important for improvement. And the 5:30am class is awesome. The comradery in that class and community of all the members of the gym is truly one of the biggest reasons I love BeachSide.

What was your first “bright spot”?
Anytime I’m checking the box of a new skill or achievement is always awesome. From simply finishing a workout without getting time capped, to handstand push-ups, handstand walking, rope climbs, bar muscle ups, deadlift >400lb, back squat >350lb

What are you working on now?
Everything! Technique, form, strength, conditioning, being consistent…and those damn double unders.

What’s your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
All the BeachSide community workouts, Friday night lights for the Open, Big Nate, the Murph, and competitions. I love being a part of this community.
