ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

January 2023 – Ivon Perez

1. Tell us about yourself:
Hi! My name is Ivón and I have been at BSCF for 3 years now. I was born in Salem, Oregon and lived there until I was 14 & then my parents moved us here to Ventura county where I have lived since. I work full time, have a 1yr and 8month old toddler & a fur baby who is 2.5yrs old.

2. What do you do for a job?
I am a Special Education teacher for students with moderate to severe disabilities such as Autism and orthopedic impairments. I teach the little ones, K-1st grade. Although challenging, I love my job!

3. Tell us something people might not know about you:
I was super into music when I was a kid. I played the cello (big string instrument) for a few years, I sang in a choir for 5 years, and also played the flute for a little bit.

4. What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
My husband. I was a little hesitant at first because it honestly scared me but I finally built the courage and decided to give it a try & I am so glad I did.

5. What was your first impression? How has that changed?
It was super intimidating if I’m being honest. Not so much the people because everyone is truly so nice and welcoming. It was more that everything was completely out of my comfort zone. Now, I feel a lot more confident and excited to keep working and pushing myself (:

6. What was your first “bright spot”?
For me, more than anything it has been feeling stronger. We recently did the benchmark “Diane” where I both improved on my time and increased the weight. It’s amazing what your body can accomplish when you stay consistent.

7. What are you working on now?
Everything. But I really want to be able to do one regular push-up!

8. What’s your favorite Beachside Crossfit memory?
Working out throughout my pregnancy, coming back (slowly but surely), and now watching my son trying to imitate an overhead squat
