ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

September 2022 – Samantha King

Samantha has been a BeachSide CrossFit member for that last 4 years. Despite her hectic work schedule, she always makes time for the gym. No matter if she’s working out 9am, 12pm or 630p class, Sam is always ready to take on whatever workout is on the board. We are so proud of all her progress and stoked to be part of her fitness journey.

Tell us about yourself:
Hey everybody!!! My name is Samantha King I was born and spent most of my days over in beautiful Santa Barbara. I grew up playing water polo, traveled all around the world with the USA National team. Still play some pick-up Masters’ games on the
weekends. Love the outdoors, reading, eating/cooking some delish food, concert going, and of course the beach.

What do you do for a job?
I currently work for Amazon in health and safety management. Before being recruited by Amazon, I worked as a health and safety supervisor in the television and film industry. That was an incredible opportunity, lots of last-minute traveling and learned how to manage some big personalities. However, my true passion is in emergency medical services. Having worked in the 911 response system on an ambulance, helping those in need feeds your soul. No other job has come close to how fulfilling that is. That being said, I am currently in school with an ultimate goal of returning to emergency services. With a greater arsenal of knowledge and responsibility as a PA.

Tell us something people might not now about you:
Majority of people are not aware that I grew up in the foster care system. Lived in group homes and foster homes throughout my childhood up until senior year of high school.

What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
My boyfriend Mr. June AOTM (aka Danny).

What was your first impression? How has that changed?
It’s always a tad intimidating going into a new environment, especially with people doing insane movements like bar muscle ups or doing heavy overhead barbell lifts. Like what is going on here?! The BSCF community is so genuinely welcoming and encouraging. The coaches are all so attentive and meticulous. Recipe’s for long term success.

What was your first “bright spot”?
The CrossFit open and Murph this year! I was able to do chest to bar pull-ups through out and that felt awesome.

What are you working on now?
Brilliance of the basics. Truly honing in on fundamentals. Would like to get some butterfly pull-ups going too.

What’s your favorite BeachSide CrossFit memory?
I love the comradery of the classes during a gnarly Hero WOD or open work out. Those are my absolute favorite.
